How to Change Audio Volume Online

Inconsistent audio volume ruins podcasts, video voiceovers, and music compilations. One track whispers while the next blasts. A phone recording sits too quiet beside studio-quality segments. Adjusting volume — or normalizing loudness across files — fixes these problems without expensive DAW software.

Volume Adjust vs. Normalization

Volume adjustment applies a fixed gain change — make everything 6 dB louder or cut volume by 50%. Use this when the entire file is uniformly too quiet or too loud. Normalization analyzes peak or average levels and scales the audio to a target loudness — useful when each file in a batch has different recording levels.

Step 1: Open Change Audio Volume

Step 2: Set Volume Level

Choose your adjustment method:

  • Percentage slider — set 50% to halve volume or 200% to double it (watch for clipping above 100% on already-loud files).
  • Decibel (dB) input — add +6 dB to roughly double perceived loudness or -6 dB to cut it in half.
  • Normalize — auto-scale to a target peak level (e.g., -1 dB) for consistent loudness across a batch.

Preview the adjusted audio before exporting. If you hear distortion, reduce the gain — clipping permanently damages audio quality.

Step 3: Export Adjusted Audio

Avoiding Clipping and Distortion

Digital clipping occurs when samples exceed 0 dBFS — the result sounds harsh and crackling. Leave 1–3 dB of headroom below peak level. If a file is already clipped at the source, lowering volume cannot restore the original waveform — re-record if quality is critical.
